Movies that changed my life or the way I experienced it
A list of movies that had a huge impact on my state of mind or changed my way of looking at things and experiencing the world around me. Logically, lots of movies are from my childhood (being a kid from the 80s) as 'everything was new' to me, but also more recent stuff.

- DirectorIvan ReitmanStarsBill MurrayDan AykroydSigourney WeaverThree parapsychologists forced out of their university funding set up shop as a unique ghost removal service in New York City, attracting frightened yet skeptical customers. The scene in which the Ghostbusters HQ is shut down and the explosion happens, is so trippy and weird (especially in the context of the movie) that it totally hypnotized me like I was living in a dream. One of my first and most intense movie 'escapism' experiences. So happy to know how that feels. Overall a funny movie, with a spooky twist and great for kids.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsMichael J. FoxChristopher LloydLea ThompsonMarty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown. After seeing this movie as a kid, I wanted to be in that movie. After 25 years, this is still one of the very few mainstream, family type blockbusters that still 'has it': clever, fast paced, good acting, hardly cheesy and out of date. But it also manages to portrait the zeitgeist of both the 50s AND the 80s. Great plot, cool gadgets. How much more could you fit into just one film, without making it a chaos? A masterpiece. Back then, and still is.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsIsabella RosselliniKyle MacLachlanDennis HopperThe discovery of a severed human ear found in a field leads a young man on an investigation related to a beautiful, mysterious nightclub singer and a group of psychopathic criminals who have kidnapped her child.David Lynch for me is - with Twin Peaks (FWWM), Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart - the primary director that made me decide I want to make films. With Blue Velvet he manages to suck you into a world that is scary, intruiging and wonderful and the same time. Film can hypnotize you, creating an artificial world of places, people, and moods in your head like it is a real world you live in. Lynch is a master in creating such an escape, with Blue Velvet he is at his best.
- DirectorMichael HanekeStarsSusanne LotharUlrich MüheArno FrischTwo violent young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic "games" with one another for their own amusement.Do you like it raw? This film is so depressive about human behavior, and it is presented in such a realistic way, that it kept me awake the night after seeing it. It resonates, like a good movie does, for over hours, even days. Still thinking about it 13 years after watching it, it feels like a traumatic event I experienced it watching. This is not an entertaining film; it is one that makes you realize how scary and traumatic violence in fact is.
- DirectorIrvin KershnerStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett. The 'early' Star Wars trilogy (episodes IV, V and VI) dominated about 3 years of my childhood. I played SW, at home, in bed, at school, on the streets. I breathed it. Star Wars was part of my world. It partly made who I am now! Empire strikes back is the most impressive one, of course because of the many developments and plot turns in this 'act'. A must see for every kid!
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSigourney WeaverMichael BiehnCarrie HennDecades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.Watched both Alien and Aliens at the same evening as a 10 or 11 years old. Scared the sh*t out of me, staying off these kinds of movies (thriller / horror genre) for months.
- CreatorMark FrostDavid LynchStarsKyle MacLachlanMichael OntkeanMädchen AmickAn idiosyncratic FBI agent investigates the murder of a young woman in the even more idiosyncratic town of Twin Peaks.See my notes on Blue Velvet. Hypnotizing, moody, addictive. It was like my Star Wars experience, but then a few years later. I feel privileged that I had the chance to experience this. Also watch the movie (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me), but after you've seen the series!
