Also in the coming days and weeks Gregor remains strangely reserved. The captain keeps pointing out that he is a married man and that he also has to act as a role model for the team. But Karen senses that these reasons are trumped up. After all, Gregor's marriage has only existed on paper for quite some time. The unsympathetic corporal Brengel courts all the more intensely for the favor of the attractive ship's doctor. During a two-day shore leave in Lisbon, the officer cadet, who is used to success, presses Karen so hard that she can only save herself with a white lie: Karen pretends to have an appointment with the journalist Thomas Sand, who has come on board the Albatros to do a report on Writing Women in the Navy. In the process, she gets to know him better, and the unplanned encounter develops into an intense affair. But as the Albatross continues its journey, Karen finally learns the real reason for Gregor's dismissive behavior. He suffers from an inoperable brain tumor and has only a short time to live. The matter is complicated by the fact that Hubertus is increasingly attracted to his beautiful, charmingly clumsy colleague Anne Berentzen. Unlike the sophisticated Veronika, Anne seems to share Hubertus' dream of a new beginning within the walls steeped in history, and is planning a modern recreation center on Sandin with him.
