Blu-ray Movies and Players
What is it? The name Blu-ray is derived from technology which uses a blue-violet laser in contrast to a red laser used in standard DVD formats. Blu-violet-ray doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, hence the straightforward "Blu-ray" was born.
Blu-ray players are high definition devices that support 1080p--the best available picture quality, which shows content at a much higher resolution than a standard DVD player.
Blu-ray discs were created to read and write large amounts of information. While a standard DVD can only hold 4.7 GB of data, a Blu-ray disc can hold up to 25 GB of high-def data, resulting in greater video and audio quality. Blu-ray discs play on Blu-ray but not standard players and you can also play standard DVDs on Blu-ray players. However Blu-ray discs and players together will provide the ultimate, optimized high-def viewing experience.
Why do I need it? Without a Blu-ray player, you won't get a true High-def picture when you watch movies or TV programs on a disc--even with an HDTV.
