Premieres: September 23, 10pm on ABC
Stars: Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price, Jamie Ray Newman, Paul Gross, Sara Rue, Veronica Cartwright, Johann Urb, Jon Bernthal, Ashley Benson (more)
Plot: : An insular New England town is turned upside down when trio of women who seem to have nothing in common suddenly manifest strange powers. They soon become close friends, attracting the attention of a rich, enigmatic newcomer who seems uncannily familiar with all their innermost desires. Based on John Updike’s novel and the movie The Witches of Eastwick.
Why We're Excited: While “Eastwick” would seem to be a siren call to lure female viewers, Lindsay Price, Rebecca Romijn and Jamie Ray Newman have enough chemistry to create fans of both sexes who might not be too keen on swallowing "CSI:NY's" gloom and doom just before bedtime. Besides, in these fantasy-friendly times for entertainment, there’s a curious lack of magic on network TV schedules – and what better home for it could there be than ABC, a network that has a successful track record with female-skewing dramas? Okay, so these ladies don’t hold a candle to Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer and Cher. But “Eastwick’s” ladies are fun to have around for an hour a week, and that could be enough to carry it through the season.
Why We're Not: If ABC’s viewers really loved fantasy fare, "Pushing Daisies" would be on the fall schedule instead of rotting in the compost pile. That said, they’re two very different series. A better point to worry over is whether the producers can continue to build on the story arcs hinted upon in the pilot which, while not exactly dull, are a touch predicable.
Trivia: Veronica Cartwright, who has been cast in the role of Bun in the series, also appeared in the film The Witches of Eastwick (on which the series is based) as the character Felicia Alden.
