Premieres: September 23, 9:30pm on ABC
Stars: Courteney Cox, Christa Miller, Busy Philipps, Dan Byrd, Brian Van Holt, Josh Hopkins, Ian Gomez (more)
Plot: : Recently divorced real estate agent Jules (Courteney Cox) seems resigned to a social life that’s restricted to drinking wine at home and embarrassing her teenage son with her unedited comments in public. But when her friends Laurie (Busy Philipps) and Elle (Christa Miller) encourage her to get back “out there,” she encounters an entirely new arena where beauty and youth are everything and, from her perspective, being middle-aged and female is a liability.
Why We're Excited: Cox’s energetic comedy chops and executive producer Bill Lawrence's ruthless wit put this pilot in the “has potential” column; they make it so much fun that we can imagine ourselves coming back again, which is a good thing. Granted, Cox can come off as a bit shrill at times, but when women of a certain age watch her confront a divorced male contemporary over, as she calls it, “sleeping with babies,” it’ll be hard not to crack a smile. Plus, it’s great to see Dan Byrd, who was so good in "Aliens in America", in a role that showcases his talent.
Why We're Not: Yes, we’ll be back… but until we see the second episode, we can’t promise it’ll be every week. It would be a shame to see Lawrence, an executive producer who watched his underrated "Scrubs" get kicked around another network's schedule like a lost puppy, see his new series fail to get a foothold. On ABC, the likelihood of that happening is distressingly high, especially given that the pilot is quirky, but not outstanding…and to find that out, a number of people are going to have to get its potentially offensive title.
Trivia: Courteney Cox is the only regular cast member to not receive an Emmy nomination for their work on "Friends".
