Beauty and the Beast is the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture.Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid are wed. The Silence of the Lambs wins the Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars in 1992. It is the first time since 1975's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest that a film has won the big five (it also shares this distinction with 1934's It Happened One Night). Some credit the landslide with the fact that Silence had been released much earlier in the year (the film went wide February 14th -- Happy Valentine's Day!) and was available to the older members of the Academy on videotape, a relatively new feature in the Academy voting process. Sleeping with the Enemy is an unlikely sleeper hit which, along with the solid performance of Flatliners (and, of course the boffo box office of Pretty Woman the year before), confirms the status of Julia Roberts as a bankable movie star. The then-unknown John Leguizamo shoots Harrison Ford's character, Henry, in the head, in Regarding Henry. Thelma and Louise introduces a young outlaw named Brad Pitt to an unsuspecting world. 15-year-old Reese Witherspoon has her first major film role in Man in the Moon. Annette Bening meets future husband Warren Beatty on the set of Bugsy. Hudson Hawk does some bodily damage to Bruce Willis's career. Fortunately, he has his new business to fall back on as he, Sylvester Stallone, and Arnold Schwarzenegger (and many other big names) are participants in Planet Hollywood, which opens its doors for the first time in New York on October 22nd. |

Paramount titan Sherry Lansing and director William Friedkin are wed. Exorcism jokes abound.
Woody Allen's August film, Husbands and Wives, is thrown into an entirely new light with the revelation that Allen, 56, has been having an affair with Soon-Yi Previn, the 22-year-old adopted daughter of his longtime paramour, Mia Farrow. Farrow reveals the fact after discovering nude photos of Previn in Allen's apartment. Allen famously excuses himself with the bromide "The heart wants what it wants." The 34-year age difference is, oddly, seldom compared to the comparable age difference between Farrow and Frank Sinatra, whom she married in 1966 when she was 21 and he was 50.
Steven Spielberg marries Kate Capshaw.
Oliver Stone stokes the fires of conspiracy theorists everywhere with JFK; the sitcom Seinfeld later parodies the film's repetitious use of the phrase "back, and to the left."
Barbra Streisand therapeutically heals an emotionally crippled Nick Nolte in The Prince of Tides. The film receives seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress, and Adapted Screenplay, but director Streisand is once again overlooked, this time in favor of...
...John Singleton, who becomes the youngest person ever nominated for Best Director, for Boyz n the Hood.
| According to Conquest of the Planet of the Apes in this year a space-born virus kills off all cats and dogs. Apes are domesticated and their close proximity to humans causes them to evolve quickly and reproduce rapidly. Though initially little more than slaves the apes become masters of the planet. | ||
