Such Is Life: Arturo Ripstein,
Arcelia Ramírez
For the director's recreation of the classical Greek tragedy Medea in a perfectly detailed ontemporary Mexican setting. For the masterful reinvention of the Mexican melodrama, as well as the ancient Greek chorus - in the forms of a mariachi band on television and the intentionally intrusive presence of the director himself. For the film's impressive balance of tragedy and very black comedy. For its fluid execution, originally in DV, of this completely organic enterprise and for the sensational lead performance by actress Arcelia Ramirez.
