- Imvelogy is a hybrid nature/culture series that highlights the importance of indigenous knowledge in conservation. The title of the show is a fusion of "IMVELO" (Zulu word for nature) and "OLOGY" (the science of), which suggests that it is about the science of nature, experienced from a cultural and indigenous knowledge perspective. The series travels across South Africa in an exploration of the relationship between various Southern African clans and their totems. The knowledge from clan elders is combined with that of cultural history experts and African language academics, to bring us a greater understanding of how exactly African heritage is aligned with conservation. The traditional ecological knowledge and conservation ethic contained in cultural teachings is highlighted, while its value in the modern context is explored. The series peers deeper into a lesser explored truth in conservation conversations, of the value of indigenous knowledge in the protection of the natural world. Indigenous cultures and clans hold flora and fauna in the highest regard. The natural world is so embedded in who they are, that references to plants and animals can be found in names, surnames, and clan names: Ndou, Ngwenya, Tau, Dube, Motlhaping, Mthimkhulu. The association with wildlife served as a measure of conservation, which is at risk of being forgotten. The narrative is driven by the voices of the participants in the show in a documentary format. Each episode is themed according to a specific clan and opens with a praise-poetry performance of the clan's praises, by a local praise poet.
