- A steel worker is told by his girl friend, that she only wants to marry a rich man. A foreign spy hears this and offers him money if he gives him the formula of the new steel he's working with.
- The story is concerned with two brothers, natives of Arnheim. Both woo Anna, the belle of the countryside. Anna declares her preference for Pieter, and their engagement is made the occasion of much festivity. The only shadow is caused by Hans' sullen demeanor, but even he, under the influence of his old grand-aunt, with whom he and his brother live, towards eventide is footing it as merrily as the rest. His forgetfulness is only assumed to mask his jealousy. He watches the lovers as they say good night, and as Pieter walks backwards across the lock bridge he is tempted to open the lock. The gates are swung open, and Pieter, still walking backwards as he waves his hand in adieu, topples over into the rushing water. He is carried over the weir and down the canal. Some of the canal people see his dark form swept along, and a boat is launched to rescue him. When dragged out of the water he is unconscious, and is carried to his home. Here he recovers, and as attempts are made to question him, Pieter slowly shakes his head. His suspicions he means to keep to himself, and Hans, before the nobility of his brother, feels his own bitterness fall from him.
