- Hannibal Pillsbury, famed for his prowess in cooking flapjacks for the Cadman lumber camp, meets Alice Dryden while she is visiting her fiancé, Andrew Cadman. Discharged for a practical joke, Hannibal meets Alice again in a Greenwich Village restaurant named the Purple Guinea Pig. Capitalizing on Hannibal's cooking talents, the two buy the restaurant, which becomes a big hit. A newspaper story of their partnership brings to town Alice's Aunt Ellen and Cadman, who collaborate to lure Alice away from her Hannibal. They invite Alice onto Cadman's yacht with the intent of abducting her, but Mickey, Hannibal's young friend, overhears their plot and informs Hannibal. Hannibal swims to the rescue, and Alice realizes that she loves her lumberjack chef.
- While at the front during the Great War, Calvin Price dreams of the day he can return home to Masseyville and marry his sweetheart, Janie Cullison. Expecting a royal welcome upon his return, he is crestfallen when no one meets him at the train. When he arrives home, his mother turns away from him in sorrow and he discovers that Janie has become engaged to Lin Sparklin. Shunned by the townspeople, Calvin finally discovers that the Sparklin brothers have slandered his reputation with stories of cowardice and drunkenness. Calvin confronts the brothers with their lies and forces their retraction. After the truth is revealed, Calvin becomes the town hero and Janie contritely returns to him, but Calvin rejects her for Rosy Redhead, a childhood playmate who remained loyal throughout his tribulations.
- When James Fisher, a young farmer with an ambition to be a mechanic, smashes up the truck that he has purchased with his savings, he decides to leave the farm for the city. Once there, he finds a job driving a department store truck and one day, while on his rounds, he meets and falls in love with Madge Rathbone. Although Madge's father Wilbur approves of James, her sisters' boyfriends are appalled that she is dating a lowly truck driver. To break up the romance, they get James fired by framing him for thievery. After he saves his former employer from a robbery, however, James is awarded $10,000 with which he starts his own trucking business and marries Madge.
