By mistake he considers Vera Novotná to be his son's girlfriend, and so his investigations cause him plenty of embarrassments.

- 1945 Prague. Citizens join fights actively against a tank brigade heading near the city. Thy are organizing a resistance against the Germans.
- Grammar school teacher Bláha hurts himself in pursuit of a red lizard, and is lying unconscious in the lonely house of Santrucek family. The postman, who found Bláha's coat and hat in the water, announces to everyone in town that the professor has drowned. But, the venerable citizens are at that moment more interested in the theatre group with the beautiful guest actress Eva Gazdová. They demand a change of repertoire and manage to persuade the theatre manager to have the group play the musical comedy The Red Lizard instead of an established play.
- Year 1919. Young country girl Anna (Marie Tomásová) arrives in Prague to serve in a rich family of builder Rubes. She encounters Toník (Josef Bek), a foundry worker in the Kolben-Danek Machinery Works and active member of the social democratic party. He, his friends and her mate Mána (Jana Dítetová) teach Anna how to deal with her employer and about the class struggle.
- The engine-driver Matys rescues his locomotive, which he affectionately calls Lisa, from the Second World War dive-bombers. He himself, however, is wounded during the attacks. Recovering at home, he looks forward to the end of the war so as to be able to ride his repaired locomotive again. The war finally comes to an end. Matys's son-in-law Vojta is an engine-driver, too. On the day his son is born, Vojta gets drunk and forgets about his duty. He is called for, but cannot be found. The colleagues persuade old Matys to secretly substitute for Vojta.
- Frantiska (Nina Jiránková), wife of farmer Podesva (Gustav Hilmar), searches in vain for her little son Metúdek on a winter night. Her rough and much older husband refuses to help her. Desperate young woman recalls the preceding events. Eight years ago she was in love with a forest worker Jan. Before the planned wedding took place Jan died while working in the forest. Pretty but poor Frantiska became a single mother. Rich widower Podesva fancied her, and to secure a future for her son, she finally gave in to his courting and married to his farm. Farmer's behaviour soon worsened.
- The central character of the film is a young woman who, out of a desire for a better life, marries into the farm. Later, however, she searches for a way to free herself from the captivity of her property. Farm has marked both Floris and his father with his hatred of people. This is why they plot against the cooperative, why they hate each other, and why Floris eventually murders his father. In his frenzied hatred, he does not hesitate to put even Frona's life in danger.
- Franta Hronek is very dedicated to work and flying. The talented air-plane designer Ruda Kolar is also an excellent pilot, however he is not disciplined and is arrogant with his colleagues. He even starts flirting with the glass cutter Lída, even though he knows that she is Franta's girlfriend. By not servicing the windlass properly, Ruda causes an accident with Franta's glider. Lída, who is the only witness to the accident, doesn't reveal Ruda's guilt. The event shakes Ruda so much that he becomes aware of his faults and changes his attitude toward people and work.
