- Marius is the keeper of an abandoned cement works staying high above the quarter of l'Estaque in Marseilles. Jeannette is bringing up her two children alone with her poor checkout operator salary. Their meeting won't be without trouble, since besides material difficulties, both of them are wounded by life. They have to learn how to be happy again.
- Blessed with the extraordinary gift of being able to communicate with animals, Yakari, a plucky little Sioux, rides into all sorts of daring escapades with his pony-companion, Little Thunder, as his totem, Great Eagle, is always close-by.
- In Estaque, a northern suburb of Marseilles, stuck between oil refinery smokestacks and the Mediterranean sea, a handful of die-hards has taken refuge in a cabaret. There is José, the owner, a big-hearted gypsy who loves cars and women's bodies; Joséfa, his wife, the establishment's stripper despite her advanced years and Marie-Sol who climbs the hill every day to visit Notre-Dame de la Garde and beseech Virgin Mary to give her a child. There is Patrick, her husband who has been unemployed for ages but who is kind despite appearances and their friend Jaco who is having a hard time. His wife and daughters hate him for not keeping up on the mortgage repayments. Last but not least is Papa Carlossa who believes that Franco still rules Spain and fantasizes about bumping him off. Alternately sad and comic, with its colorful characters, entertaining dialogue and light social commentary, "Unto Life, Unto Death" gives us the portrait of people searching for identity and struggling to survive. The result is a film that is unexpectedly fresh and brimming with love.
- Simon is a sales representative about fifty. When Mickey, his cop friend, is being shot, he leaves everything to find the murderers. Two years before, Marx, an old gambler, met Frederic, a young man that does not look very smart and started to follow him everywhere (as a puppy) and changed his name to Johnny to please Marx. Of course, Simon's story is related with Marx and Johnny's one. But the thriller is only a pretext for a psychological description of the three main characters.
- Martin hates dogs. He is nevertheless an advertising executive at Floppy, a dog food company. The pitch he makes for a new advertising campaign scandalizes the management because the central figure is missing: there is no dog. But that is nothing compared to what he learns next: Sally, a young English au pair girl with whom he had a fling, is pregnant to him. Furthermore, she has decided to raise the child on her own. Martin is torn between his guilt and his feelings towards her and so decides to try and win her over once again. Pitfalls await him, notably with his own mother, a pro third world activist who recommends an immediate abortion in the name of limiting the misery in the world, and his ex-wife, who will never forgive him for not having wanted a child when they were in love. By the end of a hectic pregnancy, Martin will finally get to the age of reason, at 35 years of age.
