Tokei-ihto learns of the murder of the senior chief Tashunka-witko. Tokei-ihto now wants to fulfill his legacy, escaping with the subgroup of his tribe to the fertile areas beyond the Missouri in Canada. While the members of the Bears Clan cross the border, Tokei-ihto encounters Red Fox, his father's murderer.

After the failure of the cooperative movement, Dicho leaves the village. Soon he dies and his son Fidan fulfills his father's last wish burying him in his native village. Being there Fidan tries to find himself in the new circumstances, in the new pursuit of cattle-breeding which is a great challenge for him, as well in making new contacts with the people of the village. He falls in love with a girl, named Blaguna, who is Lazar's daughter and soon she becomes his wife. Although he is exposed to the mistiness of his village fellows, Fidan is occupied by sheep raising with all his enthusiasm. However, trade laws are severe and unfavorable, and in such circumstances it is not possible for him to realize purposes and projects. Fidan's return to his father's home brings him neither spiritual peace that he was looking for nor new contents in his lifestyle.

- The story is inspired by the comedy of the most famous Yugoslav playwright, Branislav Nusic. Zarko, a young poet, is being chased by police for publishing an anti-regime poem. He hides in his friend Dusan's house, who introduces him to his parents and sister Zorica under the name of his old schoolmate Vlajko Micic. Love develops between the false "Veljko" and Zorica, who admires Zarko's poems. However, the poet does not reveal his true identity. Zorica's parents notice the love between the two young people, and on the advice of their family friend secretly invite Vlajko's father to come to their home.

The return of Trandafil, the old man working abroad, Kate's uncle, is a special event in the village's life. The destiny of a great number of the inhabitants depends on the wealth of the uncle returned from America. However there is no place for faith and hope as the uncle returns with no earnings at all.
