- Traces the experiences of various residents of a fictional small village just inside the occupation zone during WWII. Deals with issues including collaboration, the Resistance, the fate of French Jews, and war profiteering.

- A Lebanese kid is sent to France on a terrorist mission for "Allah's Army". An Lebanese French kid becomes involved unwittingly. A bond develops between the two, while they become alienated from and independent of the adults in their lives.
- Alain, of North African origin, lives with the memory of his sister, kidnapped before his eyes by a neo-Nazi group when they were children. Added to this is the murder of his best friend by the head of security of "La Ligue patriotique", a powerful far-right party. Alain then decides, both out of personal vengeance and political conviction, to assassinate Hugues Henry Lègle, the leader of this movement.

The game of cat and mouse starts... But who is the cat?
- Nat is driving on the interstate with his two young daughters in the back seat when a car drives by and an unknown man shoots one of the girls dead for no reason. Nat's life is shattered. He becomes obsessed with finding the killers, assaults two men, kills one and goes to jail, is left by his wife, and grows old estranged from his other daughter. We see the action first through Nat's eyes, then via Brautigan, the cop in charge of the investigation, and finally from the perspective of the remaining daughter Margo. The deconstructed narrative echoes the chaos within Nat and emphasizes the fact that the characters are out of tune with one another, which is the meaning of the original title.
- The Commune is a neighborhood with sky-rocketing unemployment, drug trafficking and crime, with it's inhabitants in the middle of resistance against municipal renovation plan. But behind this confrontation looms a murderous turf war.

Lucienne's grief lingers while the identity of Kurt's grave, buried under an alias, threatens to be revealed. Antoine returns from military service searching for work and helps out an old comrade. The Villeneuve council is dissolved and political manoeuvring begins between the Gaullists and Communists. Hortense recovers from her public shaming but becomes increasingly paranoid. Beriot receives an anonymous letter.
- The Larcher and Servier trial continues. Jeannine is disciplined for her collaboration activities. Suzanne takes Gustave in after having him released for an attempted extortion and tries to reacquaint him with his late father, Marcel. Heinrich Müller makes a surprise return but becomes a great disappointment for Hortense. Lucienne struggles to restore some normalcy to her life when she is forced to retire from teaching, at least temporarily. Antoine returns to the sawmill.
- The Larcher and Servier trial continues. Gustave prepares revenge for the US sergeant's betrayal. Müller is arrested by the French authorities but is eventually handed back under pressure to the US military. Beriot's patience with Lucienne is running out. Raymond Schwartz is nominated as the mayoral candidate for the Gaullists. Gustave finally takes action.
- The trial of Dr. Larcher continues with some interesting facts coming to light. Hortense becomes increasingly paranoid.Beriot gives Luccianne an ultimatum, and Schwartz has an offer to run for mayor. Gustave goes on the run that has a nostalgic feeling. A street and square in Villenueve are re named for Resistance heroes.
- Gustave is offered a way out after a meeting gone bad with Jerome leaves one dead. Marchetti offers some hard truths in court while awaiting his execution, and has an unexpected guest from Palestine. Shwartz gears up for the "celebration of the 4,and the trial for Servier and Daniels fate is deliberated in closing arguments by the defense and prosecution. Antoine reveals a harsh truth at the celebration!
- Antoine admits what happened to the 4 war heroes, then comes home to find Genevieve has been attacked. Gustave is moved by the words of his father's former comrades. A final verdict is reached in the case against Daniel and Servier. Raymond falls back into Jeannine's arms. Lucienne manipulates the priest. The author of the malicious notes is finally revealed. Rita has to decide whether to help Jean die on his own terms.

- Daniel seeks professional help for Hortense. Gustave and Léonor participate in the Communist party. Lucienne learns Jules' secret and seeks revenge. The workers' strike poses political problems.
- After a mill accident the workers go on strike. In 2000, Antoine is disillusioned by the ineffectiveness of the Social Security system he fought to create. In 1975, Daniel takes Tequiero back to Villeneuve to explain to him what happened.
- Hortense tries to get out of the asylum. The saw mill strike ends badly. Gustave tries to explain to Tequiero what the occupation was like. The public respond to Hortense's art show.
- Daniel discovers the awful living conditions in psychiatric hospitals. He rescues Hortense, who is mentally and emotionally exhausted, and re-establishes a lasting link with her. In 2003, Lucienne, Françoise and Bériot say goodbye for the last time.
