Muriel has been "in service" her whole life, running the household for one family. After getting her to train a younger woman to perform her tasks, the family dismisses her. She has become bitter because of her treatment.

She is awaiting hip replacement surgery, but reluctant to be operated on by a surgeon who is not a white man. Muriel is xenophobic, some might even say racist. Yet she chooses to come to Jagpur, India, to have her hip surgery and comes to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a hotel that doesn't really live up to its name, for her recovery.

Muriel refuses to open herself up to the Indian culture and so is surprised that the servant who brings her her meals, an "untouchable", an outcast in her own country, feels that she has been kind to her, simply by acknowledging her existence.
