Molesley is the butler of Crawley House, in the village of Downton, and serves as Matthew Crawley's valet. A loyal servant, he aims to take the utmost care of Matthew and tend to Matthew's every need, no matter how trivial. From putting his coat on --which Matthew insists on doing himself early on, until he sees what pride Molesley takes in this work --to volunteering his service at the earl's mansion when Matthew is not around, Molesley seeks only to serve. He is a somewhat awkward fellow, balding and more of a talker than a doer when it comes to things like sports. He is the son of Bill Molesley, the winner of the best bloom at the Downton Flower Show in 1913.
