Having started his work at Downton Abbey as a first footman, Thomas is an opportunistic schemer who will rightly or wrongly use any chance he gets to advance his own interests. From seeking to get Mr. Bates fired to plotting to hide the family dog in the woods only to "heroically" find the pooch later, Thomas has shown he's willing to go to great lengths -- outside of being a kind and likable person -- to enhance his standing. He is a liar and a petty thief and he is always on the look out for the main chance. This must mean he is looking to leave Downton, since he wants to be a valet and Mr. Bates doesn't appear to be going anywhere. So he makes up to any rich visitor, to see if there's a position going.

Thomas is also gay, but closeted to most everyone, which leads to some embarrassing, blackmail-inducing and potentially career-jeopardizing moments for him as the result of misinterpreted signals from other men, including house guests and other members of the staff. Thomas thinks he's a swell guy who other would want to emulate, and he thinks those who work alongside him are essentially a bunch of losers. He and Miss O'Brien routinely work together to make others miserable.
