Arthur "Boo" Radley is a somewhat mysterious character.

Town gossip says that when he was younger, in an unprovoked attack, he stabbed his father in the leg with a pair of scissors. His father refused to have him put in an asylum so he was locked in the cellar of the courthouse until he became ill. Then his father took him home. Reputedly mad, his father keeps him locked in his cellar. Rumours abound that he is allowed out at night.

He defended Jem and Scout Finch from an attack by Bob Ewell, in which Ewell was killed. The sherrif determined that Ewell fell on his own knife to keep Boo out of the limelight and in recognition that he was preventing a crime being committed.
