When creating the character of Madeleine Hightower, the writers for The Mentalist remained true-to-form with their use of word-play. The name "Madeleine" or "Madeline" is of Hebrew origin and it's literal meaning is: "high tower."

Very little was revealed about Ms. Hightower's personal life. She made her debut on 4-1-10 in episode 17 of Season 2, titled, "The Red Box." She is separated from her husband and is in the process of getting a divorce. She has two elementary school-aged children, Mimi and Will. She has an aunt named Ruby Hightower and a cousin Max, who is deceased.

Madeleine is very intelligent and a very by-the-book agent. She also displays a subtle intenseness, and if you look closely, her vulnerablity is detectable. As for her working relationship with Jane, it seems as if she didnt want to trust him but felt compelled to do so.

To preserve her life and those of her children from the wrath of the red menace known as Red John, Madeleine was forced to fake their deaths. For this particular story arc, Madeleine was featured from, "The Red Box" to "Red Listed."
