Lisbeth Salander is a 23-year old hacker, working as a private investigator for the security firm Milton Security. She is under legal guardianship due to her history of violence and being held in a childrens' mental institution. Despite her small size, she can fight like a man. She has photographic memory and the nonexistent social skills of someone with Asperger's syndrome. However, it is never actually stated that she does have Asperger's or anything of the kind, only that she is a very troubled, antisocial woman who is nonetheless capable of great compassion and loyalty.

Lisbeth has been severely damaged psychologically due to traumatic events in her own life. She is guilty of the attempted murder of her own father, whom she thinks she had killed after she discovered that he had abused her mother (he turns up alive in the second book in the trilogy and tries to kill Lisbeth). She has been raped, mugged, and towards the end of the second book, injured so severely that her survival is in question.

Lisbeth befriends and enters into a sort-of love affair with Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist, when he is asked by a billionaire to solve the long-ago disappearance of the billionaire's young ward. Mikael discovers that Lisbeth has hacked into his computer and rather than send her to jail, asks her to team up with him in solving the case.
