Axel Freiherr von dem Bussche-Streithorst was born on 24 April, 1919 in Braunschweig to a German father and a Danish mother. He joined the German Army in 1937 at age 18 as a junior officer. As part of the 9th Infantry Regiment, he chanced to witness the massacre of some 3000 Jews by the SS in 1942 at Dubno, on the Eastern Front. This made up his mind to be against Hitler. In November, 1943, he, as part of the von Stauffenberg plot, sought to kill Hitler by blowing himself up with Hitler when von dem Bussche was to model new uniforms for the Fuehrer. Von dem Bussche was to arm an hand grenade in his pocket and then embrace Hitler, blowing them both up. The uniform demonstration had to be cancelled when a British air raid destroyed the new uniforms the night before they were to be shown. In January, 1944, von dem Bussche was badly wounded on the Eastern Front, losing a leg. He was still recovering when the July 20 plot was tried and failed. He was not part of this plot, and so escaped Nazi justice.

After the war, he served as a diplomat in the West German embassy in the U.S. from 1954 to 1958. He married in 1950 Lady Mildred Camilla Nicola Acheson, and had two daughters. He died on 26 Januray, 1993.
