A man of few words, Castillo (or Marty, as Sonny calls him at times) is known for his starched white shirts, thin black ties, and black suits. He sees things in black & white, and with his gruff voice quickly commands respect from his team backed by intense loyalty and friendship.

In the first season (Golden Triangle parts I & II) we learn that Castillo spent 3 years in the hills of Thailand working undercover for the DEA and is fluent in Thai. Betrayed by a CIA operative, his entire team was killed, Castillo was injured, and his house was firebombed. He believed that his wife (Mai Ling) was killed at the time, and reacted by coming to Miami. He blamed General Lao Li, who was a major drug kingpin at the time.

He later finds that she survived, remarried and had a child. While Castillo has a hispanic name, his heritage and background are rarely spoken of, while his history in Southeast Asia comes into play in several episodes.
