Howard Epps is a serial killer who originally comes into contact with Bones and Booth in the first season, in "The Man on Death Row," where his attorney is trying to get him a stay of execution for a murder he was convicted of years before. While Bones and Booth try to unravel the case, they eventually discover that he actually has murdered multiple people, his targets typically young blonde women. He reappears in "The Blonde in the Game," where he leads Bones and Booth on a chase as he somehow manages to have murders committed while behind bars. Finally, he escapes from prison in "The Man in the Cell," and begins targeting Bones and the people around her, breaking his usual pattern, until he finally falls to his death off the balcony in Bones' apartment.

Epps has a fascination with Bones, and frequently tries to manipulate her through his "games." In the first episode he appears in, Bones breaks his wrist, something which is frequently referenced in the later episodes. Epps also gets married while in prison, to Caroline, although she divorces him. He later kills Caroline in "The Man in the Cell" as part of his series of attacks on Bones.
