William Burke and William Hare were serial killers active in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1827-28. They would typically ply their victims with alcohol, suffocate them, then sell the bodies for dissection by medical students. After 17 murders in 18 months, they were arrested and Hare was given immunity for testimony against Burke. Burke was hanged in 1829 and Hare disappeared.
