"Vergennes" is a character based on French diplomat Charles Gravier, comt de Vergennes.

Born on December 28, 1717 in Dijon (some sources say December 10th or 20th), he first served under his uncle, Thodore Chevignard de Chavignye, in Portugal, then at Trier, and Constantinople. His behind-the-scenes role in the revolt that propelled Gustav III of Sweden to power made his career.

Foreign minister to Louis XVI, he was key in aiding the American colonials in their revolt against France's age-old arch-enemy, England. After Benjamin Franklin admitted to him that post-Yorktown negotiations were being conducted without Gravier's authorization, Gravier took matters into his hands. The resulting Treaty of Paris formally ended the American Revolution, and gave Florida to Spain, which she had lost in the Seven Years War.

He died at Versailles on February 13, 1787. At the suggestion of revolutionary leader Ethan Allen, Vergennes, Vermont was named in Gravier's honor.
