Ronnie Cooke was a successful corporate lawyer at a prestigious law firm in Boston. As a favor to college friend Harry Senate, she agrees to speak to his students about the virtues of the legal profession, but discovers that she would much rather be teaching. Due to the teacher shortage, she gets Emergency Certification and teaches a remedial class, but not before leaving her law firm partially nude. After Harry Senate gets stabbed by the brother of Jamaal Crenshaw, a student he invested years preparing for college, she realizes she loves Harry and they begin a relationship. It doesn't last due to Harry's self-destructive downward spiral which culminates in him attempting to rape her. After Harry leaves Boston, she takes over teaching in The Dungeon and forms a brief relationship with Zach Fisher. A certain school board member who's infatuated with her manipulates her into the position of Assistant Vice-Principal, which infuriates Marla Hendricks, who is considerably more qualified, and leads to her breaking up with Zach. In 2003, she steps down as Assistant VP and becomes the school guidance counselor.
