For Ben Campbell, raised by a single mother in the working class suburb of Worcester, Mass., life was often hard -- but math had always come easy. By the age of 12, he was rushing home early from his little league practice to help his mother with her tax forms, using his incredible affinity for numbers to get her refunds that were just barely big enough to keep a roof over their heads. After acing the SATs and graduating at the top of his public school class, Ben got a partial scholarship to MIT -- a dream to come true, because his mother's nursing salary could never have covered even one semester's tuition, let alone four years at the elite institution. And from the very first day on campus, Ben was a standout genius in a school full of geniuses. A straight-A applied math and engineering major, he'd also manage to cover all his pre-med requisites by the end of his sophomore year. Now a senior, his dreams of becoming a doctor are only $300,000 of addional tuition away. The problem is that Ben doesn't know how to get that money if he doesn't get a scholarship. He is noticed by Micky Rosa and is chosen to join a group of MIT card counters. He goes with the group to Vegas to make all the money he needs for school.
