Harvey Lipschultz is a veteran teacher at Winslow High School in Boston, Massachusetts. He is known to be rather eccentric and very 'old school' in his teaching methods, constantly drawing the ire of Steven Harper, Scott Guber and most of the other teachers, who are itching to have him fired. It is possible that Lauren Davis, the head of the Social Studies Department and his boss, was a former student of his, given the fact that she "adores him" and does whatever she can to protect him from being fired. He is known to be a bigot, and possesses negative stereotypes concerning other races, yet he does treat his students with equal respect and equal disdain regardless of race. He was married to the same woman, Helen, for over 50 years until she died in 1999. He loved her dearly despite her having cheated on him at least once, but they were never able to have children. But in 1944, before shipping off to Europe, he bought the services of an African-American prostitute, who bore him a son who tracked him down in 2002 and revealed that in addition to being a father, he is also a grandfather and great-grandfather.
