Isabella Santos (Character)
from "All My Children" (1970)

Isabella Marie Swan, known as Bella Swan, is the main character of the novels Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse, by Stephenie Meyer. She was born on September 13 (1987) to Renée and Charlie Swan, a young couple living in the small town of Forks, Washington. Her mother left her father, taking Bella with her, when she was six months old. Her mother and she moved to Phoenix, Arizona.

Bella has always had few friends, never quite 'fitting in' Until she moves to Forks Washington where she is the beautiful new girl. She is also incredibly clumsy, which leads her to avoid all sports.

She fit in with the popular crowd including Tyler, Mike, Angela, and Jessica. Although she had a group of friends she was almost immediately enamored with Edward Cullen and his 'family.'

After going to the beach and conversing with Jacob, an old family friend, and member of the Quillete tribe she heard the old myths involving the Cullens and the tribal belief that they were vampires.

Bella returned home and immediately went online looking for more myths that revealed the truth. Later that week, she went to Port Angeles with her friends Jessica and Angela in search of dresses for the Spring Dance that she had had numerous boys ask her to though continued to refuse. But when Bella walked off in search of a good book shop, she found herself lost and was almost attacked by a group of men. However, Edward swooped in, saved her life, agian and took her to dinner. On her way home with Edward, the family secret was revealed. Edward Cullen was a vampire.

Bella felt no fear. Completely sure that Edward would never kill her.

As their relationship continued Bella was eventually introduced to the rest of the Cullen clan including Alice, Carlisle, Emmett, Rosalie, Jasper, and Esme. Right around Spring Break the Cullen's took Bella with them to play a game baseball.

As the vampires showed their Olympic prowess at America's favorite past time, three new vampires heard the game and came to investigate. Laurent, Victoria, and James met the Cullens and James was immediatley drawn to Bella's tantalizing scent.

Edward read the mind of the new vampires and was instantly aware of the danger. He and Bella fled Forks as James the 'tracker' pursued them. In order to keep Charlie safe and in the dark Bella pretended that she sick of the rain and the crappy small town life her father had forced on her. Although this was painful for her and Charlie, Edward was sure she would be forgiven.

In Phoenix Alice's visions began sketching out the dance studio Bella used to attend and hours later James was on the phone telling Bella that he had her mother. In order to save Renée, Bella had to flee the vampires and go to her childhood home, then she got a number to call, then she was told by James to go to the dance studio.

Once there she was confronted by the sad reality that James never had her mother in custody and that it was simply a home video recording. James was intent on torturing Bella as long as possible and did so by shattering her leg.

Once her blood was spilled though, his instincts got the better of him and he was about ready to finish her off. He bit her once on the wrist and Bella fainted. When she awoke Edward was there and James was being ripped apart by Emmett and Jasper somewhere in the background.

Bella was complaining of her hand being on fire, so Carlise commanded Edward to suck the venom out before it was too late. Edward had to will himself to drink the venom out of the open cut. He did it because Bella was in such severe pain and shortly after she passed out again.

When she awoke she was with Edward and her mother in the hospital and a good alibi was fabricated by an enthusiastic Alice to explain her injuries.

Her and Edward argued their way into an impassé. She wanted to become a vampire, he was determined to save her soul. Yet they were unconditionally in love.

The following Stephenie Meyer's explanation why she did not physically describe Bella in detail (this is only what Bella looks like to HER:

"I left out a detailed description of Bella in the book so that the reader could more easily step into her shoes. However, so many people have asked this question, I have decided to tell you what she looks like to me. But I want to stress, Bella's looks are open to interpretation.

In my head, Bella is very fair-skinned, with long, straight, dark brown hair and chocolate brown eyes. Her face is heart-shapeda wide forehead with a widow's peak, large, wide-spaced eyes, prominent cheekbones, and then a thin nose and a narrow jaw with a pointed chin. Her lips are a little out of proportion, a bit too full for her jaw line. Her eyebrows are darker than her hair and more straight than they are arched. She's five foot four inches tall, slender but not at all muscular, and weighs about 115 pounds. She has stubby fingernails because she has a nervous habit of biting them.
