OKITA Sji (family name first) was the captain of the first unit of the Shinsengumi, a force recruited from masterless samurai and lower classes to police nineteenth-century Kyto against pro-emperor revolutionaries on behalf of the the shgun, and assistant to their vice commander, HIJIKATA Toshiz. Known as one of their best swordsmen, he was one of their instructors in the arts of kenjutsu (traditional Japanese swordsmanship) and in the many fictionalised depictions of the Shinsengumi he is typically portrayed as long-haired and effeminately beautiful, one or more even going so far as to depict him as a woman disguised as a man.
