Don Draper (Jon Hamm)

Don Draper is the director of the creative department at successful Manhattan ad agency Sterling Cooper. Draper is responsible for coming up with many of the ideas, slogans, visuals, and concepts for the agency's disparate client which includes everything from cars to cigarettes to cosmetics. While Don's approach may be considered unconventional by some, he has a flair for getting to the heart of what a product "means" at its core emotionally and is then able to tailor that meaning for an audience in a way that it will resonate with them on a level that is deeper than simply commerce. He is considered by clients and colleagues alike as being among the best ever pitchmen appealing to both hearts and bottom lines.

Don is in his mid-30's, from the Midwest, and very attractive. He has a kind of charm that can be both warm and seductive, but he can also has a temper that can flare up in an instant and can be cutting and cruel. He can turn these personality traits on and off and adjust the mood depending on who his audience is.

Don is married to Betty, a beautiful blonde with whom he has two children, a son, Bobby, Jr. and a daughter Sally. Don and his family live the leafy suburb of Ossining, New York outside of the city.

Don is a very complex man who is often conflicted emotionally. He comes from a very intense upbringing that includes abuse, the death of a parent, and confusing situations. This leads Don to have a somewhat dark disposition, given to brooding, self-medication, self-destructive behaviors, and infidelity. Don smokes and drinks heavily. He is an avid reader.
