Billy Bunter (William George Bunter) was the archetypal English public school boy, with what we would describe today as "an eating disorder", but in that era he was simply known as The Fat Owl of the Remove. He first appeared in the UK in the boy's story paper The Magnet in February 1908. Written by the prolific Charles Hamilton (as Frank Richards), Bunter became so popular that many of the comic stories were turned into full length novels. The stories, and subsequent strip-cartoons, were translated into many foreign languages.

In the 1950s, the BBC turned the character into a television star.

Billy Bunter's last cinematographic appearance so far was in a series of three Dutch movies, based (mainly) on the comic book version of the character, published in Dutch since 1955 (or '54), which caused him to be featured as Billy or Billie Turf (William Pieter Turf, in full), rather than as Billy Bunter.
