Judge Turpin is the reigning magistrate of London. He becomes enamored with Benjamin Barker's wife, Lucy, and with the aid of his right-hand man, the Beadle Bamford, he convicts Barker of a trumped-up charge, and sends him to an Australian prison colony, leaving his wife and daughter unprotected. The Judge invites Lucy to attend a party at his house, which Lucy agrees to. At the party, the Judge drugs and rapes Lucy, who goes insane with guilt and grief and swallows poison. The Judge then adopts Barker's daughter, Johanna, as his ward, but begins to have lustful thoughts towards her, eventually deciding that he will marry Johanna.
