Sergeant Patrick Harper is an Irishman from Donegal, and proud of it. He is a tall and very strong soldier with a natural commanding presence. A gentle man by nature, he can fight like the very devil when he is provoked. When he first meets the - then - newly promoted lieutenant Richard Sharpe, the two men don't get along and get into a fight. Along the way though, Harper proves his worth (which Sharpe rewards by promoting him to sergeant) and becomes as close a friend to Sharpe as possible between an officer and a soldier. While fighting in Spain, Harper rescues a Spanish girl, Ramona (she is called 'Isabella' in Bernard Cornwell's books) who eventually becomes his wife and the mother of his son, Patrick Harper jr. After Napoleon has been banished to Elba, Harper returns to his beloved Donegal and becomes a "horse trader to the gentry" as he puts it himself. When Napoleon returns, however, so of course does Harper.
