Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (Sam Neill)

Cardinal Thomas Wolsey is King Henry VII's chief adviser. The king trusts him implicitly and and always seeks his counsel.

Because of this influence, and the power that goes with it, Wolsey has drawn the ire of several of the king's other advisers and noblemen who seek that power for themselves. He has also drawn the suspicions of Queen Katherine.

The suspicion is well-founded since it is Wolsey who begins to look for ways for Henry to divorce Katherine in order to marry his mistress Anne Boleyn.

Though outwardly pious as a man of faith and charming and sophisticated in his demeanor, Wolsey is a cunning character prone to greed and corruption in his quest for power.
