Biography

Totoro (formally "O Totoro") is the King/Keeper of the Forest in a rural area of Japan. He resides in a large Camphor Tree hidden beyond the thicket near the the Kusakabe family residence. Mei names him Totoro when she mispronounces the word "Troll." He is typically accompanied by smaller spirits called Chu Totoro (medium, blue) and Chibi Totoro (small, white). All three of the Totoro spirits possess spiritual powers attuned to nature and are able to draw the children into the spiritual world. Despite his massive size and monstrous roar, Totoro is a loving protector and helps the Kusakabe girls when they are in need.

Beyond My Neighbor Totoro

My Neighbor Totoro helped put Japanese animation in the global spotlight, as Totoro became a massively recognizable figure in Japan and abroad. In many areas his popularity exceeds that of Disney icons such as Mickey Mouse and Willie the Pooch. His image became synonymous with Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli and has emblazoned the company logo for decades. Totoro makes brief appearances in three other Ghibli films: Pom Poko, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Whisper of the Heart as well as the short sequel Mei and the Kitten Bus. Totoro's image also appears in Western animation such as Toy Story 3, Drawn Together, Samurai Jack (Episode: Jack and the Creature) and South Park (Episodes: Imaginationland and Mysterion Rises).
