Sam Diamond is a parody of Sam Spade, a private detective and the protagonist of Dashiell Hammett's 1930 novel, The Maltese Falcon. Spade also appeared in three lesser-known short stories by Hammett. Peter Falk is also doing a parody of Humphrey Bogart doing Sam Spade, down to the way he speaks and acts.
