Tiberius (42 BC - AD 37) was the older of Augustus' two adopted sons by Livia. He became the second emperor of Rome in AD 14, following Augustus. Although a competant administrator, he lacked the prestige and popularity of his predecessor, and by the end of his reign he had become increasingly obsessed with serving his own hedonistic desires. In the end he named his grand-nephew Caligula as his successor, a choice which has been debated ever since. It has been suggested by some that he chose the member of his family most guaranteed to ensure that his own legacy to posterity would be more favourable by comparison.
