Iago is the villain in Shakespeare's tragedy "Othello". He is perhaps the most hateful character Shakespeare ever created, worse than Richard III, because we understand Richard's motives even if we do not agree with them. Iago does not seem to have any motives other than sadistic glee at destroying the lives of all he hates. He hates Othello supposedly because Othello did not give him the promotion that Iago felt he deserved, but his hatred actually goes much deeper than that. At one point, he rationalizes to himself that he hates Othello because he believes that Othello has seduced his (Iago's) wife, but this is very difficult to swallow since Iago never mentions it again. Iago seems to hate Othello purely because he feels that Othello, a black man, is superior and he cannot stand the thought. Pretending to be his best friend, Iago dupes Othello into believing that his (Othello's) white wife, Desdemona, is cheating on him. This eventually drives Othello to kill Desdemona although he still loves her. it would seem that Iago has won, but Emilia, Iago's wife, realizes what has happened and exposes him, paying for it with her own life when Iago kills her in revenge.
