Wash is the pilot of the space craft Serenity, a Firefly class ship. Captain Reynolds hired him based on recommendations, over the objections of his good right arm and first officer, Zoe, who didn't think much of Wash the first time she met him. Something must have changed (probably the act of shaving off his mustache) because she ended up marrying Wash!

Wash comes from a planet with so much air pollution you can't see any stars in the skies at night. He speculated that's what drove him to go to flight school to see what was up there in the skies. He probably also ended up in flight school because he got fired as a fry cook from an earlier job.

Wash describes himself as a large, semi-muscular man, who's very much in love with his wife, Zoe, who is fully capable of killing him with her pinky if he got her miffed enough. He is, however, secure enough as a husband to swat her backside as he chases her to their bunk (for the sex he's never going to get if he pushes her temperament too much). Wash and Zoe always find time to be two love birds when the right moment comes along, which is rare on a ship whose bits and pieces are falling off as they fly along in outer space or land on a planet.

Wash has a collection of rubber dinosaurs on his control panel and sometimes plays with them during moments of boredom.

He's a bit miffed about Zoe's close relationship with Captain Reynolds (the two of them were in the War together), always calling him 'Sir' and following dangerous orders. Wash is also a realist and knows Reynolds does things for a real reason, so Wash ends up going the extra mile to help Reynolds and the crew out in tight spots.

Wash is also the voice of reason and mediation. Whenever the crew members fly off the handle or start going to extremes, Wash grounds them in reality, suggesting something more practical. He's also a fan of the concept 'better to run away and live to fight another day,' which is the exact opposite of Reynolds and Zoe who walk into the thick of things fully knowing the odds are against them. But he's also just as capable of rushing in where wise men fear to tread if the situation calls for drastic action.

Wash loves to show off his flying skills, be it by doing a Crazy Ivan, flying through a raging battle zone, picking up the hover craft in a barn swallow or gliding the ship in on 20% power.
