Apocalypse Now (1979)

Lance is a famous surfer from the beaches south of Los Angeles, California. He was assigned to the "forward .50s" on the boat. He is young, naive, and somewhat vain. Captain Benjamin Willard (Martin Sheen) notes, "One look at him and you wouldn't believe he ever fired a weapon in his whole life." He enjoys water skiing behind the boat and suntanning. He uses a reflector when he suntans so his face and neck receive equal sun.

When the crew meet Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore (Robert Duvall), whose U.S Army helicopter cavalry squadron are assigned to provide an escort for the boat and its crew into the mouth of the Nung river, Lance is surprised to discover Kilgore is an avid surfer who has several other surfers in his ranks. Lance is a free spirit who smokes marijuana and takes acid. In particular, he drops his last tab of acid before the boat approaches to Do Lung bridge.

Lance is the only member of the original crew to survive. After Willard kills Kurtz, he emerges from the temple, finds Lance among Kurtz's followers, takes him by the hand and leads him back to the boat. They leave together.

Apocalypse Now Redux (2001)

Captain Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) steals Kilgore's favorite surfboard presumably for Lance. This results in Kilgore sending forth helicopter's with an audio-recorded message pleading with Lance to return the board. Kilgore says, "I will not hurt or harm you. Just give me back the board, Lance. It was a good board... and I like it. You know how hard it is to find a board you like."
