Catwoman's alter ego is Selina Kyle. She is an enemy of/aid to Batman.

She has nine lives (maybe she says she does), clawed gloves (sometimes) and a whip.

In one continuity she was a meek secretary until her boss, Max Shreck, threw her out of the building where she worked because she found out about his greedy plans of ruining the city. She survived, and she became Catwoman. Not much of a back story.

The recent movie with Halle Berry, though, is not a great place to get info about Selina/Catwoman. The graphic novels "The Long Halloween" and "Dark Victory" by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale have Catwoman as one of the principal characters. Catwoman is a master thief who encounters Batman on Gotham's rooftops, while Selina is a bored socialite who knows Bruce Wayne socially. Selina and Bruce are romantically involved on and off, while Catwoman and Batman struggle with the fact that they seem to be on different sides of the law and yet have a definite attraction to each other. During the course of the stories Catwoman's role has been ever changing; she has fled Batman and the law, only save his life at least once and fight the Falcone crime family

In Latin America, she is called "Gatbela".
