Bilbo Baggins is a Hobbit of the Shire, born on September 22nd in the year 2890 (1290 Shire Reckoning) of the Third Age of Middle-earth (using J.R.R. Tolkien's literary timeline). In 2941, the Wizard Gandalf enlisted Bilbo as a burglar for Thorin Oakenshield and Company, Dwarves intent on liberating their ancestral treasure from the dragon Smaug. As a consequence of this adventure, Bilbo acquired a magic sword which he named "Sting" (more like a dagger to anyone other than a Hobbit) and a magic Ring and returned to his home of Bag End comfortably wealthy.

In 2980, following the deaths of his relatives Drogo and Primula Baggins, Bilbo adopted his young cousin Frodo and made him his heir. On September 22nd, 3001 (1401 Shire Reckoning), Bilbo gave a huge party to celebrate his 111st (Eleventy-First) birthday (making him one of the most long-lived Hobbits on record).

Hobbits are much like Men, but shorter (averaging between 2 and 3 feet tall) and somewhat more long-lived (90 to 100 years). Hobbits have hairy, almost furry, feet with tough, leathery soles. They tend to prefer to lead quiet, uneventful lives.
