JONNY VANG A film review by Steve Rhodes Copyright 2004 Steve Rhodes RATING (0 TO ****): **
There's a lot of love in the small Norwegian village where Jonny Vang (Aksel Hennie), a would-be worm farm magnate, lives. He and Tuva (Laila Goody) both love Magnus (Fridtjov Såheim), his best friend and her husband. As JONNY VANG opens, Jonny and Tuva, a big-busted blonde, are having energetic, noisy and funny sex together in an old trailer in the woods.
There's also some hate in town as well, since someone cracks Jonny's head with a shovel and fires painful pellets at him with an air rife. When he reports the incidents to the police, they infer that the problems are probably his fault, so he should deal with them. It's quickly obvious to the audience, but not to Jonny, who the perpetrator of the crimes is.
A quirky comedy, it does have its moments but not many. It relies on a big ending twist, which comes completely out of left field, in order to deliver the story's punch. This is a technique which I find infuriating.
JONNY VANG runs 1:25. The film is in Norwegian with English subtitles. It is not rated but would be an R for sex, nudity and violence and would be acceptable for most teenagers.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 3-14, 2004.
