ACCIDENTAL HERO: ROOM 408 A film review by Steve Rhodes Copyright 2002 Steve Rhodes RATING (0 TO ****): **
One of the beauties of American high schools is the wide variety of competitive activities offered to the students. At James Logan High School in the blue collar town of Union City, California, one of the popular academic sports is called "forensics." You may have called it speech or oratory when you were in school. Basically the students put on small skits, humorous or dramatic, and the judges rate their presentations. Terri DeBono and Steve Rosen's ACCIDENTAL HERO: ROOM 408 tells of the work of a hard-working teacher named Mr. Lindsey, who teaches an ethnically diverse group of students to strive to be their very best.
As admirable as Mr. Lindsey's dedication and accomplishments are, the documentary about his work is quite bland. Perhaps one needs to be able to appreciate the fine points of forensics in order to get more out of the film. But, for the average moviegoer, watching it is rather like viewing a cricket match. The people on the field are pouring their hearts and souls into their sport, but for most people, the sport has trouble keeping your attention.
ACCIDENTAL HERO: ROOM 408 runs 0:48. It is not rated but would be G and would be acceptable for all ages.
The film is being shown now as part of San Jose's Cinequest film festival (www.Cinequest.org).
