ABSOLUTE HUNDRED
A film review by Steve Rhodes

RATING (0 TO ****): ***
In Srdan Golubovic's ABSOLUTE HUNDRED (APSOLUTNIH STO), Sasa Gordic (Vuk Kostic) grew up admiring his older brother, Igor Gordic (Srdjan Todorovic), a gold medal winning shooter. Sasa wants to be a championship marksman like Igor and his father. Right now Sasa is in training for the Junior World Championships.
In a different country, this might be a hopeful story, but not in war-ravaged Yugoslavia in which Mafia war lords rule. Sometime after returning from the war, Igor became a heroin junkie with a serious habit and a huge debt load, all owed to gangsters who will kill him if he doesn't pay immediately.
Vuk Kostic gives a heart breaking, understated performance as Sasa. His answer to the hopelessness about him is to use his only skill and turn himself into a one-man sniper vigilante to avenge those who have destroyed his brother's life. Not a fun film, ABSOLUTE HUNDRED is certainly a moving piece of cinema that is both a thriller and a touching story of brotherly love.
ABSOLUTE HUNDRED runs 1:33. The film is in Serbo-Croatian with English subtitles. It is not rated but would be R for violence and drug usage and would be acceptable for most teenagers.
The film is being shown now as part of San Jose's Cinequest film festival (www.Cinequest.org).
