Fiona Harvey, a Scottish lawyer, has filed a $170 million lawsuit against Netflix and the creator of the hit series Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd.
The lawsuit, filed in a California court, alleges that the streaming giant and Gadd have engaged in a blatant act of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and violations of Harvey’s right of publicity.
According to the 34-page complaint, the series, which was marketed as a “true story,” has painted a false and damaging portrait of Harvey, depicting her as a “twice convicted stalker” who “sexually assaulted” Gadd. The lawsuit claims that Netflix and Gadd told these “lies” to over 50 million viewers worldwide, “because it was a better story than the truth, and better stories made money.”
The plaintiff is seeking a staggering amount in damages, including $50 million in actual damages, $50 million in compensatory damages for “mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life and loss of business,...

“Loot” and “Pose” star Michaela Jaé Rodriguez says while growing up, the Logo dramedy series “Noah’s Arc,” which followed the lives and relationships of four gay men in Los Angeles, was one of the first shows she saw that made her feel represented.
“There were so many people of color on that show,” Rodriguez told Variety. “They did highlight a lot of trans women. It wasn’t as prominent, but the girls were there. I saw a whole encompassing story around all of the Lgbtqia+ community in that show and it resonated with me, it still resonates with me today.”

Netflix’s drama series Baby Reindeer hooked viewers from the first episode. Before the series begins, the show informs viewers that the series is based on real events.
Creator Richard Gadd based the series on his 2019 one-man show, Baby Reindeer. Later, Netflix picked it up and adapted it into the drama series fans are familiar with today.
But whatever happened to the real Martha from the show?
Baby Reindeer Creator Acknowledged Martha Was Loosely Based On A Real Woman
Although Baby Reindeer was inspired by true events, creator Richard Gadd always maintained that he took creative elements for the sake of storytelling.
“It’s very emotionally true, obviously: I was severely stalked and severely abused. But we wanted it to exist in the sphere of art, as well as protect the people it’s based on,” Gadd shared with The Guardian.
While the series definitely resonated with viewers, some of those creative liberties enraged others.

Richard Gadd's smash-hit series "Baby Reindeer" is exactly the kind of story that thrives on Netflix. Based on true events that happened to Gadd, the seven-episode drama has been one of the streamer's most discussed original offerings since its debut in April of 2024. Gadd plays a fictionalized version of himself, an aspiring comedian named Donny Dunn who is already failing to address his previous traumas when he meets a woman named Martha (Jessica Gunning), who proceeds to stalk him and the people close to him. "Baby Reindeer" is an adaptation of Gadd's award-winning one-man play that he performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2019, so it's not like this information or the way he, as a survivor, has elected to discuss it is new.

Is Netflix sending a message about its support for Baby Reindeer?
The streaming giant has posted Jessica Gunning’s audition tape for Martha in Richard Gadd’s gripping “true story” about his experience with an alleged stalker.
The video is likely a sign that Emmy voting is around the corner, but it dropped just hours after Netflix was slapped with a $170M lawsuit by Fiona Harvey, the real-life Martha.
In the 80-second clip, Gunning reads a scene from Baby Reindeer’s first episode, in which Donny (Gadd) and Martha go for coffee and the latter erupts with anger.

The Clerkenwell Films series is expected to be competitive come awards season and Netflix said it would defend the show “vigorously” against allegations made by Harvey.

With Baby Reindeer holding a spot at the top of Netflix for weeks, and Bridgerton taking over only to continue the same tradition, it's safe to say that these shows are the streamer's biggest originals of 2024 so far.

You’re watching your favorite show, and one of the main characters is in a jam.
He’s held captive by mercenaries and, for the past two episodes, has struggled to escape a labyrinthine prison. It’s unclear whether our hero will live or die, but the next episode opens with a warning: “The following contains a depiction of suicide. Viewer discretion is advised.” Welp, you think, I know how this story ends.
So what happens when trigger warnings need spoiler warnings? As content disclaimers trend in television, some viewers are taking issue when they give away crucial plot details or ruin surprises.
Take Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer,” which dulled a shocking assault scene with a preemptive warning reading, “The following episode contains depictions of sexual violence which some viewers may find troubling.” Or Apple TV+’s “Severance,” which tipped viewers off to an episode cliffhanger by revealing, “The following contains a depiction of self-harm.

Baby Reindeer became one of Netflix’s biggest outings this year, with the miniseries receiving praise from fans and critics alike, as well as becoming one of the service’s most streamed series. The series is actually a semi-autobiographical black comedy and a passion project by Richard Gadd, who wrote the original play and the screenplay for the series and also starred in both these works. But with the series’ rising popularity, the fans began to dig deeper into the real story behind the series, and there have been many speculations about the true identities of the characters depicted in the series.
And while Gadd urged fans not to dig deeper, many real-life people had trouble because they were identified with the characters from the series. The most prominent of these cases is that of Fiona Muir-Harvey, who, herself, claims that she is the inspiration for the character of Martha...

Fiona Harvey, known colloquially as the real “Martha” from Netflix’s hit limited series “Baby Reindeer,” has made good on a vow to sue Netflix. Harvey and her attorneys believe Netflix did not live up to a standard of care in protecting her identity. Further, Harvey says many plot points in “Baby Reindeer” are defamatory and simply untrue. She is suing for $170 million.

Netflix’s live roast of NFL great Tom Brady made it into the Nielsen streaming rankings for its premiere, despite only being available for a few hours of that week. After its first full week on the streamer, it rocketed to the top of the charts.
The Roast of Tom Brady gathered 1.67 billion minutes of viewing for the week of May 6-12, leading all streaming titles by a wide margin (the second-place finisher, Grey’s Anatomy, had 1.11 billion minutes of watch time for the week). The roast also had by far the biggest weekly viewing tally ever for a Netflix special; the previous high was 798 million minutes for Chris Rock’s stand-up special Selective Outrage in March 2023.
The 1.67 billion minutes of viewing for the roast in the United States translates to about 27.87 million hours, or about two thirds of Netflix’s reported worldwide total (42.2 million hours) for the special that week.

Netflix has been sued over its portrayal of a woman depicted as a stalker in Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer.
In a lawsuit filed on Thursday in California federal court, Fiona Harvey, who claims to be the inspiration behind Jessica Gunning’s Martha, accuses Netflix of defaming her through statements in the show that she’s a twice-convicted stalker who was sentenced to five years in prison for sexual assault. The streamer and showrunners “told these lies, and never stopped, because it was a better story than the truth, and better stories made money,” the complaint states.
The lawsuit, which seeks injunctive relief, seeks at least $120 million, including the streamer’s profits from the series. It brings claims for defamation, negligence and violations of right of publicity law.

That quote from Donny (Richard Gadd) in the second episode of Baby Reindeer just might be on the mind of Netflix on Thursday after the streamer was hit with a $170 million defamation and negligence lawsuit over the widely watched black comedy.
“This is an action by Plaintiff Fiona Harvey (“Harvey”) against Defendants Netflix, Inc. and Netflix Worldwide Entertainment (collectively “Netflix”), for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, gross negligence, and violations of Harvey’s right of publicity, arising out of the brutal lies Defendants told about her in the television series, Baby Reindeer,” reads the long-promised suit filed today in federal court in Los Angeles.

The Scottish woman who claims to be the inspiration for Richard Gadd’s hit Netflix “Baby Reindeer” has sued the streamer, seeking monetary damages of at least $170 million.
Fiona Harvey has publicly said the character of Martha in “Baby Reindeer,” played by Jessica Gunning (pictured above), is based on her. She is suing Netflix, alleging defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and violations of her right of publicity.
The suit was filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Copy of Harvey’s complaint is at this link.
Harvey’s lawsuit alleges Netflix told “brutal lies” about her in the “Baby Reindeer” series.
“The lies that Defendants told about Harvey to over 50 million people worldwide include that Harvey is a twice-convicted stalker who was sentenced to five years in prison, and that Harvey sexually assaulted Gadd,” her complaint says. “Defendants told these lies,...

Daniel Fienberg The shift to a backloaded schedule built around a May 31 deadline for Emmy consideration has drained some of the surprise from the spring TV calendar. Viewers are growing accustomed to a glut of high-profile limited series and prestige returning shows from March to May, with the biggest titles and stars creating their own gravitational fields of self-perpetuating coverage.
Luckily, though, there’s still room for discovery. With its literary pedigree and a budget that burst off the screen in the form of astonishing evocations of 17th century Japan, FX’s Shogun had “prestige” written all over it. Yet the care taken by creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to deliver this story without having it reek of appropriation and voyeurism was evident throughout. Still, who would have guessed that Shogun would be so successful that the network would want to push forward with future seasons beyond James Clavell’s novel,...

The state of television consistently shifts, and even now, shows become unlikely hits overnight. A series like Baby Reindeer does not seem like a barn burner on its face, yet it defined the months of April and May for Netflix. An appetite is growing for international shows, and Hapless joins the trend of British shows coming stateside. With the release of Hapless on Peacock, showrunner, creator, and director Gary Sinyor sat down with Fandomwire to discuss the comedy series. Along the way, we discussed its roots, his background when approaching the show, and his push to make more Hapless in the future.
The Origins of Hapless
Sinyor had helmed several movies and episodes of television before kicking off Hapless. Sinyor explains, “I think the biggest difference isn’t necessarily between TV and film, but between working with a large crew or working with a very tight small crew. And I...

The first-ever Gotham TV Awards offered a stark contrast between the Gotham Film & Media Institute’s annual celebration of cinema. While both awards shows were founded to toast independent productions — that is, before the Gotham Awards increased their budget cap eligibility requirements in 2023 — the Gotham TV Awards felt like a strangely intimate gathering that was mostly populated by showrunners, network executives, and the Gotham TV Awards jurors, with a few actors and press sprinkled in.
Sure, it could be that it’s the first year for the awards show and thus a smaller turnout and even venue. Or perhaps the Gotham TV Awards will remain a coveted industry event, one that feels like it’s only for insiders.
The intimacy was most prominent during the Anniversary Tribute for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” icon Mariska Hargitay. The award was presented by Hargitay’s former co-star Stephanie March, and...

“Colin from Accounts” was the biggest winner at the 2024 Gotham TV Awards, the first ever television-only kudos from The Gotham Film and Media Institute. Across seven categories it was the only program to win multiple trophies: Breakthrough Comedy Series and Best Performance in a Comedy Series for co-creator and star Harriet Dyer. The Paramount+ series is an Australian import about a pair of singles brought together by a car accident. Check out the complete list of Gotham champs here.
The drama categories were split. Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” starring co-creator Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as strangers who become spies masquerading as a married couple, was the Breakthrough Drama Series recipient. Baby Reindeer captured the Breakthrough Limited Series award and Colin From Accounts was the only two-time winner at Tuesday’s inaugural Gotham TV Awards.
While the dress was black tie, the event moved at a remarkable clip, with barely an hour and 20 minutes required for the seven competitive awards and three career honors. Previously, the Gotham Film & Media Institute had included TV awards in its film-centric gala, which is held just after Thanksgiving as Oscar season is gearing up. This is the first year TV has had its own event.
Richard Gadd, who created and starred in Baby Reindeer, accepted the trophy on the behalf of his collaborators. As a comedian, he couldn’t resist quips about a “6-inch tall” pastrami sandwich at Katz’s Delicatessen and thanked his mom and dad for “messing me up enough to make me an artist.” But he closed his speech on a sincere note.

Baby Reindeer, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Colin From Accounts were the top winners at the first-ever Gotham TV Awards, which took place in New York on Tuesday night.
Accepting for breakthrough limited series, the final award of the night, Baby Reindeer star and creator Richard Gadd offered a thoughtful observation about the Netflix show’s popularity and some advice for anyone going through a difficult time.
“It’s weird that a show as messed up as this has gone on to strike a chord with so many people,” Gadd said of darkly comic thriller. “I think it speaks to the fact that I think a lot of people in the world are struggling right now. I don’t know much in the way of advice, but I do know that nothing lasts forever. So if you are in a rut, just keep going. Persevere, persevere, persevere and I promise you things will get better.

“Baby Reindeer” was among the winners at the first-ever Gotham TV Awards on Tuesday evening, taking home the prize for breakthrough limited series.

Months before the highly anticipated third season of “Hacks” premiered, Gold Derby’s thousands of 2024 Emmy predictors collectively agreed that it poses the biggest threat to defending Best Comedy Series champion “The Bear.” As the Max series’ latest batch of episodes dropped throughout May, its standing in the main race steadily improved, with its well-received finale triggering noticeable boosts in multiple categories.
Over the past week, the share of top Best Comedy Series votes held by “The Bear” decreased by 1.2%, while that of “Hacks” grew by the same amount. Although the two programs remain separated by nearly 80 percentage points, it speaks volumes that “Hacks” is at least 1.5 points ahead of every other contender.
After simultaneously running second in their respective races for several weeks, lead and supporting “Hacks” actresses Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are now closer than ever to toppling frontrunners Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) and Meryl Streep...

It all started with a cup of tea on the house.
That innocuous gesture between a failed comedian turned barhand named Donny (Richard Gadd) and his soon-to-be stalker, Martha (Jessica Gunning) would spark a chain of events eventually culminating in the streaming success of “Baby Reindeer” on Netflix. The small, U.K. production based on Gadd’s real-life experience all centered around the complicated chemistry between the two characters — so naturally, the stakes were high filming their first encounter.
In Variety’s “Making a Scene,” we sat down with Gadd, co-star Gunning and Tofilska to break down recreating that cup of tea that changed everything.
“It’s one of the most important parts of the show,” says series creator and co-star Gadd. “I always wanted the show to open straight away, throw you right into the deep end.”

Rape jokes are never funny, except when a survivor gives you permission to laugh. In the rearview of a hard-earned recovery, it is pretty funny that the joke-teller went to bed in a sopping wet towel, commended by their friends because at least they took a shower for once.

“Success in streaming is really about engagement” and finding hits is “more art than science,” such as data exercises or algorithm-driven work, Netflix co-ceo Greg Peters said in London on Tuesday. With the global streamer now reaching about 270 million, he said a conservative estimate of an average of two viewers per home means the streamer serves more than 500 million viewers worldwide.
“Variety and quality” is key “to satisfy this audience” given their diverse tastes, he said at Deloitte’s Media & Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference, . “We need a lot of great stories that appeal to these different tastes,” he said. “No algorithm” or data could have predicted the success of Sex Education, the exec noted, highlighting content decisions are “more art than data.”

Greg Peters, co-ceo of Netflix, paid tribute to the streamer’s U.K. production pipeline at a conference in London on Tuesday morning local time.
Peters cited shows including David Beckham’s docuseries “Beckham” and the controversial series “Baby Reindeer” as well as “One Day,” “Fool Me Once,” “Heartstopper,” “Top Boy” and “The Crown” as some of the U.K. shows that had succeeded on the platform, calling them “tremendously diverse” in terms of their content.
He restated the streamer’s commitment to investing in U.K. content, which has been significant since Netflix’s global launch in 2016. “We’ve continued to invest heavily in our slate,” he said.
“It’s why we continue to invest, continue to grow, even as competitors are going back.”

You've probably heard of Baby Reindeer, a miniseries that came out on Netflix and became an instant hit on the streaming service with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
A human tragedy, a confession, and a course in self-therapy, all contained in seven episodes, turned the soul of anyone who watched it inside out. Beginning as a black comedy, episode by episode it becomes something more — a story about pain, masculinity, self-identification, rehabilitation, and much more.
Baby Reindeer's Main Villain Wasn't Martha
The story of stalker Martha reveals, as the series progresses, a deeper trauma — rape, manipulation, and gaslighting — that the author experienced during his college years at the hands of his older "patron" and "mentor," 55-year-old screenwriter Darrien.
The author reveals the main pain of his life completely unexpectedly, even forcing the viewer to put the series aside for a few days. Against the backdrop of this episode, Martha...

While Stranger Things has announced an animated spinoff and is gearing up for a fifth and final season, a new drama set in ‘80s America has hit Netflix. It’s got monsters, it’s got kids in peril, it’s got a bike and no mobile phones, and it couldn’t be more different.
Created and written by Abi Morgan who penned heart wrenching series River, as well as true life dramas The Iron Lady and Suffragette, Eric stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Victor, a puppeteer on a popular kids’ show whose son Edgar goes missing. He is convinced the way to bring his son home is to create a real life version of the monster Edgar was drawing and get it on the show. Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

Netflix approached Richard Gadd about adapting his hit one-man stage show “Baby Reindeer” into a series, but the comedian had screen aspirations for his Olivier Award winner way before that. “I always thought that it had televisual potential,” Gadd tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Even when I was writing the play, I kept thinking it has quite a lot of interesting things that would work in the television realm. I think the characters are quite interesting and it’s a thriller. It hard a sort of fast-paced breathlessness to it that I think works in the thriller genre. Firstly, I wanted it to succeed as a theater show, but in the back of my mind, I thought I hope it does go on to have a life beyond the stage for sure.”

One of the greatest fears of many actors is being typecast after a successful role. It just so happens that after seeing an actor do a great job as a certain character once, casting directors all over Hollywood want them to do the same thing again and bring the same level of success to their project.
Sometimes, however, the similarities between two characters an actor plays are nothing more than coincidence. Such is the case with Baby Reindeer star Jessica Gunning and the obsessive personalities of her characters in other series.
Is Jessica Gunning in The Outlaws Season 3?
Of course, after Jessica Gunning's brilliant performance in the black comedy-thriller Baby Reindeer, which blew up the top of Netflix and stayed there for weeks, audiences were looking for more TV shows and movies starring the actress. And to the viewers’ surprise, there weren't too many options.
Although Gunning's acting career began more than a decade ago,...
