Having helped bring the likes of The Mitchells Vs The Machines, Blue Eye Samurai, Nimona, and the Oscar-winning Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio to our screens in recent years, Netflix has become quite the force in the world of animation. And the streamer got seriously animated yesterday at their Next On Netflix: Animation event in LA yesterday, showing off over 30 new shows and movies heading to the platform in 2024 and 2025. With buzzy projects including Timothy Olyphant-starring sci-fi anime Terminator Zero, the hotly anticipated second season of League Of Legends series Arcane, and Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft among the releases teased at the event, there's plenty to get stuck into. We're just a few days away from the premiere of "Ultraman: Rising" on Netflix, the latest addition to the ever-growing animation library of the streamer. Animation has been on shaky ground for the last few years, with the animation guild growing stronger to fight for fair contractions as creatives continue to battle against the dystopian threat of artificial intelligence. Fortunately, animation is still as popular and well-loved as ever, and Netflix has been absolutely crushing it as of late. Not only did the streamer pull in an Academy Award for Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio" in 2022, but shows like "Blue Eye Samurai," "Arcane," "Love, Death, & Robots," and movies like "Wendell & Wild," "The Sea Beast," and "The Mitchells vs. the Machines" are some of the best releases of original animation, period.

After ruminating on the idea for Blue Eye Samurai for quite a while, Amber Noizumi and Michael Green had difficulty finding the right medium – until they decided the story needed to be animated in whole new style. Enter Netflix, which had just recently started an adult animation division, and the eight-episode series was born.
Blue Eye Samurai follows Mizu (Maya Erskine), a young warrior driven by revenge as she lives as an outcast in Edo-period Japan. Her blue eyes signify her as an outsider in a Japan that has closed its borders, and her gender prevents her from legally seeking revenge. Green and Noizumi say they wanted to build up as many obstacles as they could for Mizu to overcome, as a warrior seeking to “transcend her station.”

It's not like HBO is the main sci-fi titles’ creator right now, but the network’s The Leftovers, Avenue 5 and, of course, The Last of Us were indeed gems of the genre. Aside from these series, there was also an animated one that managed to gain a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, although it hasn’t become as recognized as the mentioned titles.
Its plot revolves around the crew of a damaged interstellar ship who are forced to stay on an alien planet named Vesta. It’s rich in picturesque nature and unique creatures, but this beautiful image keeps lots of dangers hidden behind these landscapes.
The survivors decide to separate – just like in a typical horror movie – and all three groups are aimed to make their way back to the spaceship and not to die on Vesta.

There are dream jobs, and then there are dream jobs. Acting seems like one of the more potentially fun dreams, especially when someone gets cast in a major franchise. Who among us hasn't imagined getting to be a part of "Star Wars," "Star Trek," the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or whatever movie or television series makes our hearts beat faster? Talk about living the dream. Heck, sometimes those dreams can even be shared, with friends or family members getting to live vicariously through the actor. In the case of actor Maya Erskine, who recently starred as one half of the spy duo "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on Prime, one particularly intense "Star Wars" fan in her family even (jokingly) threatened to disown her if she didn't take a role on the Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi."

X-Men 97 Nominated at the Gotham TV Awards, Predicted to Win Emmys - Main Image
The dust has barely settled since the season finale of X-Men ‘97 dropped, yet the accolades have already started to pour in.
The highly-acclaimed animated series is nominated in the Breakthrough Drama Series category at the 2024 Gotham TV Awards, with credit to Beau DeMayo as creator and Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, Kevin Feige, Brad Winderbaum, and DeMayo as executive producers.
It is up against some serious competition in the category, versus Black Cake, Fallout, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and The Curse; however, it is worth noting that X-Men ‘97 is the only animated show to get a nomination in this year’s awards.
Nominees for the annual Gotham Awards are selected by a panel of film and television critics, journalists, and festival programmers, with the award ceremony to be held on June 4, 2024.

One down. Three to go.
That’s how we meet mixed-race master of the sword Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine) in Blue Eye Samurai — in the midst of her quest for vengeance on her four potential fathers. All of whom were the only white men in 17th-century Edo-period Japan during the time of her birth.
Blue Eye Samurai takes place in an era when Japan’s borders were closed to the outside world so citizens would never see a face that wasn’t Japanese (except in rare cases of illegal trade). Because of Mizu’s inherited blue eyes, she’s treated as if she’s “less than human,” “pitiable,” “monstrous,” and a “creature of shame.” And that cannot stand. As a woman, she wouldn’t be allowed to pursue her enemies. So she disguises herself as a man, ready to inflict her justice by whatever means necessary.

Netflix will be playing catch-up with its slate of films in the latter half of 2024 due to last fall’s dual union strikes. And their slate of animated projects is set to be previewed at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France this June. Zack Snyder famously had a plan for an R-rated Star Wars story that never saw the light of day, thanks to Disney buying out the IP before Snyder had a chance to pitch it properly. Several years later, the idea found itself being developed as an original IP by Netflix, something that Snyder hoped would turn into a juggernaut like Star Wars itself.

In physics, the three-body problem is ugly. When you have one or two objects exerting gravity on a body, it moves in a predictable pattern. Add a third and its chaos.
In 2024, the three-body problem in media is that every piece of art has a creator, a consumer and politics. So when Netflix’s sci-fi series 3 Body Problem debuted on March 21, anti-woke crusaders such as VCs Marc Andreessen and Andrew Chen only made it one scene in before posting that it was a cri de coeur to end the far-left agenda. Two days after the show dropped, Chen, a Vc at a16z, posted on X, “The opening scene just punches you in the face. Irl cancel culture driven by high school and college students. Science and academia becoming politicized. Tearing down the past. Etc.” A day later, his boss Andreessen posted similar thoughts.

The scene they’re referring...

“Shōgun” is a rare sort of television adaptation. It’s based on a book (which previously inspired an Emmy-winning limited series in 1980) that fictionalizes real history, creating a compelling blend of history, fiction, and fantasy. The thrilling TV tale makes for a fun jumping-off point to get into 17th century Japanese history, and now that we’re at the midpoint of the season, it makes sense to check up on some of the show’s biggest unanswered questions.
Did Lord Tokugawa (the “real” Toronaga) actually escape a hostage situation by pretending to be a woman?
No. But Lord Ishida, the equivalent of Ishido, did! Historically, Ishida and Tokugawa’s beef was every bit as spicy as their counterparts in “Shōgun,” up to and including the assassination attempt at Osaka Castle in 1600 When the assassination failed, Ishida got out of dodge by dressing in drag and riding in a palanquin — without...

The other Oscar nominees are “The Holdovers” (edited by Ace president Kevin Tent), Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Anatomy of Fall,” and “Poor Things.”
“Spider-Man: Across the Universe” won the animation award, “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” earned theatrical documentary honors, and “Escaping Twin Flames” took the non-theatrical prize.

In all the excitement of the BAFTAs, it’s worth appreciating the craft that helps all those films make any sense at all. Here’s the full list of the British Film Editors’ award-winners.
Imagine a world without film and TV editors. It doesn’t bear thinking about, really. Making anything with a camera at all would be bloody hard, for a start, and then you’d have to use that take where Idris Elba realised he had yoghurt on his trousers. Oh, behave.
Good job, then, we’ve got British Film Editors, the non-profit association dedicated to the art of sticking all those bits of footage together to make something sensible-looking. Every year, they hold the Cut Above Awards, a celebration of editing achievement comparable to the guild awards in the States.
Held on 16th February, the 2024 awards pitched current awards favourites Oppenheimer and Poor Things alongside documentaries like Still: A Michael J.

Revenge is an art form. And Blue Eye Samurai takes it personally.
Set in 17th-century Edo-period Japan, Blue Eye Samurai follows Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine), a mixed-race master of the sword who lives a life in disguise seeking to deliver revenge. “It’s an Edo-period tale of revenge — Kill Bill meets Yentl,” said co-creator Amber Noizumi.
Wife and husband team Noizumi and Michael Green co-created Blue Eye Samurai. Sharpen your swords to prepare for this stunningly realized new animated series coming to Netflix on Nov. 3.
“We want people to sink into it and be taken by the story and the level of artistry and forget they’re watching animation,” said Green. “We would love this to cross over into every interest — that if you like The Witcher, if you like animation, if you like Game of Thrones, if you like The Crown, if you...

Blue Eye Samurai became one of the most popular shows of 2023. Since its announcement, there has been a rumor going on about how the series would exceed everyone’s expectations. In most cases, over-expectations result in disappointment, but not in Blue Eye Samurai’s case. It became one of the top show streaming series on Netflix, and the fans are eagerly waiting for the second season.
It has been a few months since the series concluded season one. But it again made the headlines after the Annie Awards went on air. The series wreaked havoc at the award show and won multiple awards. While it was an amazing series, few people expected it to win so many awards. Blue Eye Samurai bagged six different awards at the 2024 Annie Awards.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sling-shotted past the competition to dominate the 51st Annie Awards, which were handed out Sunday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall. The unlikely hero of FX/Hulu’s new adaptation of Shōgun is… James Clavell’s 1975 novel.
The pervasive perception of the epic tome, nearly 50 years after its publication and nearly as long after its wildly popular NBC television adaptation, is that it’s dated — a colonialist Dances With Samurai that would never be made today, leaving aside how much Shōgun DNA is visible in offerings like Max’s Tokyo Vice and Netflix’s spectacular Blue Eye Samurai.
In truth, read through a modern lens, Clavell’s novel is both a spectacular yarn and as thoroughly well-intentioned and well-researched a story as a popular-skewing book could be in 1975. This is evident in Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo’s fresh take, which is less a reinvention and more a carefully considered excavation of the Clavell text. Although there are very clear shifts in focus and adjustments that reflect an evolved cultural understanding,...

Though it’s based on a 2005 movie of the same name, Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith is something that’s increasingly rare these days: an honest-to-goodness TV show. The Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane-created spy thriller understands the required rhythms of its medium very well. Each episode presents a self-contained chapter within the dangerous marriage of John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) while also subtly forwarding their overall story.
The commitment to the usual TV format also means that Mr. and Mrs. Smith gets to introduce one hell of a roster of guest stars. Save for its finale, every episode of this show features at least one stupendously talented and famous guest star. Mindy Kaling’s upcoming Netflix comedy series set in the world of pro basketball has added three new cast members, Variety has learned.
Brenda Song, Scott MacArthur, and Drew Tarver are all joining the show alongside previously announced series lead Kate Hudson. The untitled series received a 10-episode order at Netflix in June 2021.
The official logline states, “When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Hudson) is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Netflix’s adaptation of One Piece into a live-action series last summer wasn’t just a hit – it topped the charts as the most in-demand show of 2023. The pressure was immense, given the massive popularity of Eiichiro Oda’s original manga and its anime version. But Netflix’s series didn’t just meet expectations; it soared past them, quickly becoming a streaming sensation.
Since its debut, One Piece has been a juggernaut on Netflix, even securing a second season thanks to its overwhelming success. According to Parrot Analytics and The Wrap, the series’ demand was 52.8 times higher than many other streaming shows in the first 30 days of its US release. And the hype hasn’t died down; people are still talking about it!
This isn’t just a flash in the pan. One Piece’s live-action series not only leads the pack in Netflix’s streaming charts but also outshines other popular 2023 releases.

More than 40 years ago, in 1982, director Nicholas Meyer's "The Wrath of Khan" revitalized "Star Trek," overcoming its low budget to be the shot in the arm that "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" failed to be.
This was the second time that the "Star Trek: The Original Series" cast reunited on the silver screen. With how long it has been, it's sadly unsurprising that most of the original "Star Trek" main cast is no longer with us. Spock's sacrifice and emotional last exchange with Kirk in "The Wrath of Khan" are even sadder and more poignant now with Leonard Nimoy's real-life passing in 2015.
Even most of the film's own supporting cast have passed on. Ricardo Montalbán, who delivered the performance of a lifetime as Khan Noonien Singh himself, died in 2009 at age 88. However, a select few of the movie's cast are still with us.
