- Quotes
Lou Grant: This year, Murray's gonna win.
Mary Richards: Oh, Mr. Grant, that is sensational. Murray's gonna win!
Lou Grant: But remember: it's top secret.
Mary Richards: That's right. I know. Oh, Mr. Grant, that's gonna be so hard to hide. I mean, when I know a secret, my whole face just lights up. He's gonna guess right away.
Lou Grant: Mary, we don't want that, do we? Wipe that smile off your face.
Mary Richards: How can I?
Lou Grant: Think about death.
Mary Richards: [Mary stops smiling, then smiles again, and shrugs] Hee, hee!
Lou Grant: Think about pestilence; and plague; and war; and rot; and slime; and putrid glop!
Mary Richards: All right, all right, I'm under control.
Mary Richards: Yeah.

Lou has inside information that Murray will finally win a Teddy award this year. Mary is asked to organise the entertainment for the event.
There's a brilliant sketch where Mary thinks she might sing at the awards and Lou has her audition for him.
Everyone (including Marie Slaughter) goes to the ceremony and Sue Ann, Ted, Lou, Mary all win. Georgette does a fantastic song and dance routine (Steam Heat). But will Murray actually win?
Gavin MacLeod does some great acting in winding up the story here. Brilliant writing too.
